A somber memory of a fallen teammate helps motivate the Salinas girls’ volleyball team to stay focused throughout the 2010 season.
Genevieve Giammanco was killed in a car crash in April. She was expected to help lead the team in what would have been her senior season.
"She is missed dearly by our team, and we play the season for her," head coach Andrew Mandon said.
In Giammanco’s absence, the Cowboys have turned to a trio of outstanding returning starters in Ellie Larronde, Alex Barbeau and McKenzie Palassou. All three players helped Salinas to a 25-5 overall record last season, including a 10-1 mark in league play.
Larronde played on the right side last year and actually led Salinas in blocks. Several schools are recruiting the senior to play at the college level, including Chico State.
Barbeau and Palassou are coming off a fantastic club season playing for the Main Beach 16’s where her team won the national division at the Junior Olympics. Barbeau was voted team MVP.
All the returning talent has Mandon excited about what the team could do this season.
"The team looks promising this year," the head coach said. "Our goal is to win league."
The Cowboys will open Tri-County League play on Sept. 23 at home against San Benito. Mandon says the team’s biggest challenge will be recovering from the loss of Giammanco.
"The primary obstacle we face is to take the court without (Giammanco)," Mandon said.
