Soledad Sophomore Heating Up

The Central Coast Section is renowned for producing some of the top pitchers in California. Sophomore Ivan Sanchez doesn't seem too hung up on that fact, and his big week makes him one of the top players to watch in the coming weeks and seasons.

Sanchez slugged two homers and tallied six RBIs in a two-game series with Pacific Grove last week. The sophomore catcher was also responsible for the go-ahead hit in each game, as the Aztecs improved to 6-2.

In the first game on Tuesday, Sanchez slugged both his homers, finishing with four RBIs in Soledad's 5-2 win. Against the same Pacific Grove team a couple days later, Sanchez again put his team ahead with a two-RBI base hit. The Aztecs won that won 10-5.

Head coach Damien Ryan singled out his sophomore for praise, as the second-year player also caught every inning last week.

“I believe his performance was special in a sense that we needed a bounce-back week and got it,” Ryan said. “Without his week, we may not be in the position we are.”

Soledad was swept by Carmel twice to open up Mission Trail League play before heating up last week. The Aztecs get a week off from league play before taking on Gonzales in a two-game series next week.
