Presentation girls’ basketball player Joesetta Fatuesi has dominted the Central Coast Section all season long and has her team in the Division II championship game.
The 6-foot-2 freshman center is already one of the top recruits in the country in the 2014 recruiting class, but the first-year player may be primed for a letdown.
Fatuesi will be matched up against Archbishop Mitty in the championship game on Friday at 6:30 inside the Leavey Center. The Lady Monarchs (22-7, 9-3) have one of the tallest defensive-minded centers around in 6-foot-4 Vanessa Leo.
The senior will be charged with slowing Fatuesi down, as Mitty’s star defender is averaging 2.8 blocks per game.
Fatuesi will still likely get her points, as she’s too talented to be shut down completely. But Leo’s size will bother her in the post, as the freshman is used to having a decided size advantage inside on every night. That won’t be the case this time, however.
Even if the Panthers’ best inside presence has a slow night, Presentation is capable of winning this game riding the strong play of guards Nici Gilday and Chelsea Punian. The duo combined for 28 points in a game earlier this season against Sacred Heart Cathedral, as each player is capable of dominating the game from the perimeter.
The Lady Monarchs have their own top perimeter player in point guard Ashley Watson. The 5-foot-7 senior is averaging 12.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.
Desirae Sanchez is usually the recipient of Watson’s brilliant passes, as Mitty’s sharpshooter leads the team in 3-pointers made on the season. Fellow guard Amanda Lovely lacks Sanchez’s deadly 3-point shot but is very good at finishing around the basket and is second on the team in scoring.
Leo exerts most of her energy at the defensive end but still averages seven points per game.
This game will probably come down to how Leo defends Fatuesi in the post. If Leo can handle the Panthers’ low-post threat without a double-team, the Lady Monarchs have a great shot at winning this game.
