Game Of The Week 4/1/2011
Written by Angela Ceaser

Who: Palo Alto Vikings (10-3, 7-0) at Westmont Warriors (7-4, 5-4)
Where:
Westmont High School, Campbell
When:
Saturday, April 2, 11 a.m.

Why to Watch
One of the top hitting teams in the CCS takes on a team with some of the best pitching in the section, as the hot-hitting Palo Alto Vikings take on the strong-armed Westmont Warriors in a late-morning Saturday matchup.

The Vikings are hitting .372 as a team, with eight regulars hitting over .300. The offense is led by senior T.J. Braff, who has a team-high 20 RBIs over the first 13 games of the season. The 6-foot-4 slugger has hit two homers this season and has a team-high six extra-base hits.

Will Glazier (.419), B.J. Boyd (.571) and Austin Braff (.562) are all great hitters who have formed an excellent middle of the lineup for head coach Erick Raich.

The Vikings have some talented pitchers, as well. 6-foot-2 junior Ben Sneider has throw 35.2 innings and has posted a 0.39 ERA and 21 strikeouts. Sneider threw five innings on Wednesday, however, and may not be available to pitch this game.

The start will likely fall to fellow junior Kevin Kannappan, who has posted a 2.47 ERA but has been touched up on a couple of his starts.

Westmont’s lineup will need to jump on Kannappan or whoever starts this game for Palo Alto early for the team to have a chance. The Warriors are hitting just .276 as a team, but Jonathan Collins and Anthony Frediani are both capable hitters who can lead the offense on any given day.

If the bats are quiet through the early going, Westmont’s pitchers are talented enough to slow down the mighty Vikings’ offense. Marshall McKinnon and Brett Solano are both proven arms who can keep the Warriors in the game.

The Vikings are the more balanced team, but the team could be ripe for an upset. Look for the Warriors to jump out to a fast start and hold on late.

Westmont 5, Palo Alto 4

The Wildcats played in a war with Sacred Heart Cathedral last Tuesday, as the team needed nine innings to down the Fightin’ Irish.

Wildcats ace Ashley Miller threw every pitch for Woodside, earning her Athlete of the Week honors from CCSsportsline.com.

Miller struck out nine batters and walked just two in her team’s 4-3 extra-inning victory. The senior has now won a section-leading seven games for Woodside. Miller’s only loss this season came against Notre Dame, when the Wildcats’ defense made four errors.

Miller has beaten Gonzales, Monte Vista Christian, Lynbrook, King City, Del Mar, Menlo and Sacred Heart Cathedral this season. The ace is also among the section’s leaders in strikeouts, with Miller having struck out 77 hitters in 55 innings of work.

Soledad Sophomore Heating Up

Soledad Sophomore Heating Up

The Central Coast Section is renowned for producing some of the top pitchers in California. Sophomore Ivan Sanchez doesn't seem too hung up on that fact, and his big week makes him one of the top players to watch in the coming weeks and seasons.

Sanchez slugged two homers and tallied six RBIs in a two-game series with Pacific Grove last week. The sophomore catcher was also responsible for the go-ahead hit in each game, as the Aztecs improved to 6-2.

In the first game on Tuesday, Sanchez slugged both his homers, finishing with four RBIs in Soledad's 5-2 win. Against the same Pacific Grove team a couple days later, Sanchez again put his team ahead with a two-RBI base hit. The Aztecs won that won 10-5.

Head coach Damien Ryan singled out his sophomore for praise, as the second-year player also caught every inning last week.

“I believe his performance was special in a sense that we needed a bounce-back week and got it,” Ryan said. “Without his week, we may not be in the position we are.”

Soledad was swept by Carmel twice to open up Mission Trail League play before heating up last week. The Aztecs get a week off from league play before taking on Gonzales in a two-game series next week.

Who: Archbishop Mitty Monarchs (31-2, 13-1) vs. Summit SkyHawks (28-7, 10-0)

Where: Power Balance Pavilion (Formerly Arco Arena), Sacramento

When: Friday, March 25, 8 p.m.

Come support the Central Coast Section, as the area’s top basketball team, Archbishop Mitty, goes for a Division 2 state title. The Monarchs will be matched up with the Southern Section’s Summit, a team that surprised many in making it this far.

“Everyone always thought it would be (San Diego) Lincoln, so we are a little shocked,” Mitty head coach Tim Kennedy said.

Lincoln has been at the top of the Division 2 state rankings all season long, and had only one loss before going down to the SkyHawks in the semifinals.

Either way, Mitty will be preparing for a talented group of skilled players. Summit has a Big Three in guards Montigo Alford and Devon Alexander and forward Dorian Cason.

Alford is a lightning quick point guard with an excellent handle, while Alexander is the team’s top outside shooter. Cason, at 6-foot-7, has been a monster in the paint throughout the postseason.

The Monarchs field an incredibly balanced team of their own, with supremely talented sophomore forward Aaron Gordon surrounding by a group of steady guards. Seniors Colin Wan and Kyle Toth form the core of an experienced backcourt that rarely turns the ball over and almost always makes the right decision with where to pass.

Junior Neil Vranicar is also expected to play a large role, as the 6-foot-5 forward is a very strong all-around player.

“It’s been a combination of everything this year,” Kennedy said when talking about how his team has been successful. “Aaron gets most of the attention, but our guards have been huge for us. Vranicar and Wan and Toth all do a great job of getting us easy buckets.”

Preventing easy buckets is high up on Kennedy’s list of things to preach to his team this week. Summit does a great job on the offensive glass thanks to the way Alford drives to the basket.

“I think keeping them off the boards and slowing down their dribble penetration is going to be key for us, because they’re so athletic and they’re so adept at getting easy shots,” Kennedy said.

Both teams like to get up and down the floor and run, so expect some high-flying action and big-time dunks. The team that clamps down on defense late in the game will likely be the team holding the trophy at the end.

Who: Matt Aiello
Class: Senior
School:
Bellarmine
Sport:
Volleyball

The Bellarmine boys’ volleyball team is quickly establishing itself as one of the top teams in the Central Coast Section, if not all of Northern California. The Bells (15-1, 4-0) got a huge week from senior middle blocker Matt Aiello, who earned CCSsportsline.com Athlete of the Week honors.

The 6-foot-5 Aiello was successful on 39 of 51 attempts and only committed six errors. The senior’s .647 kill percentage led all Bells last week.

“Matt was as proficient a hitter as they come,” head coach Scott Petersen said.

Aiello helped the Bells win league matches against Archbishop Mitty and St. Francis before heating up to help Bellarmine win the Dos Pueblos Invitational with a three-set win over the host Chargers.

The Bells and Aiello are back in action this week in a WCAL matchup with Sacred Heart Cathedral tonight. Bellarmine will then play in the Leland Charger Classic, with games beginning at 8 a.m.
